Migraine Girl

My boyfriend calls me Migraine Girl.

Why?

When I have migraine, I hate hearing noise.
When I have migraine, I hate seeing the glare of lights.
When I have migraine, I hate feeling too much movement.
When I have migraine, I hate smelling the smoke from cigarettes and vehicles.
When I have migraine, I hate warm places.
Migraine? I hate it!

Now thinking about it, it appears that when I do have migraine, my senses are on a hightened state to the point where I get irritated easily. That's why I tend to be alone in a dimly lighted (or dark) and cold room whenever I experience an attack. I usually get into trouble when I talk to people at this time. (Sometimes I'm even the one who starts the trouble. LOL).

Oh, well, I guess he has his reasons for calling me that.

I experience those same symptoms. I don't get the visual aura that some people have.

My first clue that a migraine is coming is that everything and everyone starts to annoy me. I get irritated about the smallest most insignificant things. I'm critical of everything I see and hear. Sometimes the things that irritate me are so inconsequential that it will jolt me in to realizing how crazy it is that I would be irritated, that's when it hits me... a migraine is coming.

I get regular (every 3 weeks) acupuncture treatments as my primary preventative measure. This has been really helpful to me. It has helped to reduce the frequency and intensity of my migraines. I have been on every drug available and none of them were very effective and most had terrible side effects. For me the acupuncture has been the most effective preventative. I still have to take Frova or Fioricet when I get a full on migraine.

With my acupuncture, now there are times where I get these pre-migraine symptoms of irritability and sensitivity to light, sound and chaos that will last for several days without developing into the full pain of a migraine. Hooray I don't get the big pain, but to everyone around me I might as well have, because I'm snapping at everyone. Sometimes I wonder if people even remember the real me.

Hi Gregg, so I guess that makes it the two of us. But your idea of accupuncture, I'll look into it. Thank you for sharing that with me. I, too, have tried so many drugs available for migraine, and the result? Ulceration and very low BP. I even got confined in the hospital because of the severity of the side effects!

I think I can try your method, too. I'm tired of having to suffer from it for the longest time.

Thanks again!

Kristine, I hope the acupuncture works for you. I remember feeling so deflated when my neurologist announced to me that I had been on every drug available (included experimental ones) and that I should pick one that I liked the best.

That is when I decided against my nature to try acupuncture, something I had alway regard as akin to a witch doctor. Just keep in mind that it takes a while for the effect to build enough to notice improvement. When I started treatment I went twice a week for a several months then gradually tapered down to my once every 3 weeks cycle.

Also, I have found not all acupuncturists are equally skilled. You may have to try a few to find one you like. Another thing is there are different sytles of acupuncture. I found that I prefer the Japanese style. They use smaller needles, you can't even feel them.

I also think it helped that my acupuncturist studied/apprenticed in Japan for 8 years before starting his practice here in Florida. Best of luck!

I didn't know there are different types of acupuncture! I hope I can also find a good one here in the Philippines. Thanks again!
